Since November, there has been mayhem on the blue microblogging app. We cannot predict how this bird app will be in 2023, which is worrisome especially for those who have a business on the app.
The 27th of October 2023, one week before the pandemonium began, Elon Musk officially bought Twitter. Elon made the decision to fire half of the company’s employees on November 4 in order to begin his rule as Twitter’s new owner. A large portion of the people who were laid off were Africans, and many of them announced their termination on Twitter. There were 7500 layoffs. According to him, Twitter’s workforce was too large and placed too much emphasis on content moderation, platform safety, product development and marketing.
Blue Tick verification for $8/month
Elon added to the chaos by making Twitter’s blue tick verification available to everyone who can afford $8 monthly,
Elon Musk and the community of new and retained Twitter employees enabled the subscription-based verification tick on Wednesday, November 9.
The Twitter blue tick was typically awarded to users with sizable following and reliable backup. It was employed to separate sincere accounts from fraudulent ones. The blue tick typically made followers of these account feel secure with information by the account.
Twitter’s verification blue tick was given rarely and occasionally until power was given to Elon Musk. Elon says his vision for Twitter is to be known as a platform for accurate source of information.
Unfortunately, this new turn caused a lot of mishap. Because the new blue tick verification system does not require actual verification, a lot of cloned accounts got the verification ticks. Everyone except Musk could not have predicted how well that would have gone, with a tremendous influx of fake “verified” accounts, many of which were Musk impersonators. Even more impersonated accounts like that of Donald Trump, Jesus Christ, LeBron James and others were verified.
What will be the fate of the blue bird app?
Although the subscription based blue tick verification has been brought down, we should not feel safe on Twitter yet. Elon has said that Twitter is testing their AI to make users experience better. He says, ‘Please note that Twitter will do lots of dumb things in coming months. We will keep what works & change what doesn’t.’
Do you think the blue tick verification subscription was a way for Musk to make back the money Twitter lost?
